Opening Keynote: A New Job Description - The Capacities of a Contemporary Teacher & Professional Learner
Feedback form is now closed.

The capacities of the contemporary teacher are a combination of knowledge, skills, and dispositions that correspond directly to the changing roles of all learners.  Dr. Alcock will describe the viable classical capacities that we should prize and keep as teachers as well as share the new capacities identified as vital for all contemporary educators.

In an information-saturated world, today’s children must think for themselves and be professional learners who know how to make quality decisions, how to challenge information how to synthesize information and feedback effectively, how to generate information and contribute to knowledge, how to think about information and process it, how to connect to networks and evaluate the quality of network resources, and how to be a high-quality contributor to a network.  Dr. Alcock sees these responsibilities as shared between teacher and student openly and actively.

The identification of the six capacities and their corresponding provocative questions and action steps might lead to the reconsideration, if not a renegotiation, of a learning institution’s job description and professional development services.

Focus questions for this keynote:

  1. What does it feel like to be an educator today?

  2. What are the six capacities of a contemporary teacher?

  3. What is the job description today for a contemporary teacher?
