STEM Integration in Primary Years Mathematics
Feedback form is now closed.
This presentation will unpack our school's journey integrating science and technology into primary mathematics learning. We have taken four key areas - science (material world), technology (construction), computer science (coding), and design (architecture). These have been used as authentic contexts in which to situate mathematics learning. The journey so far has thrown up some very interesting points. These include:
  • the need for comprehensive skill development for teachers
  • the need for an overall structure that gives guidance to teachers
  • the absolute potential for student engagement
  • the potential for switching reluctant maths learners into active participants
The integration of these project and challenge based learning initiatives has taken place alongside regular number knowledge and strategy instruction. Meaning that we haven't taken a 'baby out with the bathwater' approach. While this is early days in our journey the experience so far is too good not to share!
