A Scenario Based Language Assessment for a Design Thinking Classroom
Feedback form is now closed.

Design Thinking, a method for creating practical resolutions of real-life problems, enables students of English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to develop 21C learning skills, including communication, creativity, and critical thinking. While many language tests do not take the development of 21C skills into account, Scenario Based Language Assessment (SBLA) can measure whether learners can transfer the 21C skills acquired in design thinking classes into different scenarios.

SBLA is an integrated-skills test that requires the learners to accomplish a sequence of tasks in a thematically-coherent, socially-familiar, purpose-driven scenario reflecting real life scenes  (Sabatini & O’Reilly, 2013).

In this presentation, a SBLA developed using Articulate Storyline, an e-learning authoring software that helps to create interactive courses, is administered to 50 ESL learners who participated in a design thinking project.

The results show that the proposed SBLA, mirroring the tasks in design thinking but in an imaginary scenario of saving an astronaut stranded in Mars, prove its validity and reliability to measure 21C learning skills.
