Authentic Use Of Drones In Education

Drones are taking the world by storm and schools are getting increasingly interested in how they can use them. Join Dr. Lian Pin Koh from the university of Adelaide as he takes you through designing STEM activities that involve students doing real science in the field.

This workshop is suitable for any teachers who are interested in using drones in an authentic way in education including, but not limited to geography and science teachers. There are obviously many application those teachers who are involved in extra-curricular activities such as aerial video and photography.

Please note this workshop involves travel to an off-site location. A bus will leave immediately after the opening keynote and return just prior to the closing keynote on first day of the conference.

Workshop Overview:

Part 1 (1 hour)

  • Proliferation of low-cost RPAS for civilian applications
  • Different RPAS (multirotor, fixed wing, VTOL), and their pros and cons
  • Different sensors, and their uses and features
  • Key considerations for K-12 education when designing student activities involving RPAS

Part 2 (2 hours)

  • Field-trip for demonstration flights and hands-on experience
  • Collect data for exercise in Part 3

Part 3 (1 hours)

  • Risk assessment, management and safe operations, relevant to K-12 education
  • Data processing possibilities (orthomosaics, 3D models)
  • Use of acquired data to do a small analysis exercise

9:00-9:30: Travel to off-site location (Bus leaves from Expo drive. Meet immediately following the keynote)

9:30-10:30: Part 1

10:30-10:45: Break

10:45-12:45: Part 2

12:45-13:30: Lunch (Onsite)

13:30-14:30: Part 3

14:30-15:00: Travel back to Convention Center in time for closing keynote
